I hadn’t seen Dane McDeglin to speak to since I was six. Twelve long years. Not since my tomboy days when I used to sneak over the fence into the gypsy campsite, and tag along with his gang of gypsy boys.

At twenty-three he was even more devastating. Over six foot and with a body worthy of a bare knuckle champion. Successful businessman to boot.

Yes, I was badly smitten – I always had been – and he seemed to like me at first.

But nothing could have prepared me for the way our past history would rise up and sucker-punch what we felt for each other.

I came home from boarding school to find that my father had remarried without telling me. As if that wasn’t bad enough, his new wife was Maeve McDeglin of all people. She’s the mother of my ex-boyfriend and lover, Dane McDeglin.

So to my horror I have to spend the summer holidays in our overcrowded family home with Dane, my new stepbrother. He’s the one who broke up our relationship. Now he will be here, there and everywhere, and I will have to deal with his presence every day while nursing my broken heart in secret. Will Dane and I be able to rub along as step siblings or will our relationship become even more hostile?

The McDeglins are Irish Travellers or gypsies, and so my father’s marriage draws my family into the Travellers’ conflict with the local council.

Besieged both within and without, will I have the strength of mind to cope with this situation?

Dane forgave me and we were a couple again, albeit in secret. Then out of the blue his Uncle Johnny announced his daughter Careen’s engagement to Dane, her first cousin. This was as much of a surprise to Dane as it was to me, but Dane felt he had to honor his uncle’s choice in accordance with the Irish Traveller custom of arranged marriages.

Where does that leave me? Dane is still living with my family. He is my stepbrother after all. So I can see but not touch. Like but not love.

As I am in love with Dane there is no way I’m going to tempt or persuade him to forsake his clan honor. I love him too deeply for that. I can only carry on from day to day hoping some chance of fate will prevent their marriage for Dane would never change his values for me, would he?
